The Woman, Her God and Her Makeup

image

With the inception, popularity and high demand of makeup in Nigeria, many women are all out to make the best use of the skills, services, knowledge and products of makeup not minding the huge price tag placed on it in order to look well packaged and beautiful. Having grown up in a conventional environment, I was taught that those who make up have the ‘Jezebel spirit’ in them(I’m sure I wasn’t the only one). When I grew up to the stage of making decisions for myself, this statement got stuck at the back of my mind, hence, making me train as a makeup artist. I asked some questions, the responses I got still didn’t make sense. So I decided to search the scriptures to clarify this issue, the proceeds from this search quenched my curiosity once and for all.

Before we get into the scriptures let’s take a look at a brief history on makeup to get to appreciate this discourse better. Makeup is dated centuries back where Africans used natural cosmetics for tribal face painting during the birth of a child, as a sign of love and purity, to signify the rite of passage to adulthood, as a means of communication between tribes and for battles. Tribal painting is an established and historically significant aspect of tribal cultures dating back to ancient times in Africa.
Sub-Saharan Africans have been using cosmetics for many centuries before the Egyptians, the first recorded use of cosmetics dates back approximately 3000BC during the time of Egyptian dynasty. Eye makeup was a part of their daily grooming and routine. Infact,  the use of eye makeup was spiritually linked.

Ancient Mesopotamian women, where Abraham originally came from ( the modern day Iraq, part of Iran, Syria and part of Turkey), crushed semi precious jewels and used them to decorate their lips. Red clay mixed with water was used to colour their cheeks, and henna was used to dye their nails orange or yellow.
The Israeli women were not also left out, reports show that countless items linked to the use of cosmetics and perfumes have been unearthed in excavations throughout the land of Israel. In the Bible, one of Job’s daughters was named “Keren- happuch” in Hebrew, the name could mean “Horn of the Black (Eye) Paint”, that is, a receptacle or box used to store makeup, for example, Kohl or eye makeup. (Job 42:14). The name could have alluded to her beauty in general, but it also seems to suggest that the use of cosmetics was known at that time.

image

Having given a brief history of makeup let’s delve into what the scriptures say on the Woman, Her God and Her Makeup. From the book of Esther, we were told that Queen Esther had to undergo beauty treatments for 1year (12 months) for the King’s beauty pageant. The first six months was for skin care(application of oil and myrrh to the skin), while the other six months was with perfume and cosmetics (Esther 2:12 NIV). Queen Esther found favour with whomever she met including King Ahasuerus! Of course there were other pretty and even more endowed women in the pageant for the King to choose from, what stood Queen Esther out? Her heart was towards God, she knew God for herself and the Hand of the Lord was upon her!

image

On the other hand, there is Queen Jezebel who was King Ahab’s wife. She grew more powerful than her husband and made him commit lots of atrocities that were detested by God (1Kings 21). She never believed in God. There was an account of Jezebel trying to seduce Jehu, the new King of Israel by painting her eyes, arranging her hair and standing seductively by the window for Jehu to see her. Jehu had to call out to the eunuchs that were in the room with her to push her down to the floor which they did thereby leading to her death(2Kings 9:30 Msg). Neither did she know God nor wanted to, she had a wicked spirit. This made God detest her thus leading to the kind of despicable death she had.

These women, Esther and Jezebel used cosmetics and makeup but what made one stand out from the other? Esther had a relationship with God while Jezebel didn’t.
Peter told godly women that their beauty shouldn’t come from outward adornment instead it should be from the inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is of great worth in God’s sight (1Peter 3:3-5 NIV). After reading these scriptures, I realised that God wants us to be beautiful of course with these outward adornments but that shouldn’t be our primary focus. Rather, He wants us to focus more on building our inner self thereby producing a gentle and quiet spirit. Remember, when the container is beautiful and the content is not then its worthless. When one doesn’t know God and keeps investing her time and money on the outside, the person is like a ‘gold ring in a pig’s snout’ (Prov 11:22 Msg). That is how the bible recognises a beautiful face on an empty head.

The AirBrush Makeup

image

Due to questions asked by some of our clients on what the Airbrush makeup is all about, putting up this little piece on what we need to know about Airbrushing became expedient. Sure you’ll find the information very useful.

The Airbrush makeup is a modern technique for the application of makeup in a spray that covers the skin and leaves it flawless. It is light weight and long lasting. Airbrush makeup represents the easiest way to neutralize unwanted discolouration and balances skin tone.
The Airbrush technology was first used for paintings and automotive works but now it has invaded the makeup world.
It is used by pouring a small amount of makeup designed for airbrush use into a chamber of the gun. When the machine is turned on and the trigger pulled, a light spray of makeup comes out of the gun in a fine mist. The fine mist of colour covers the skin and gives the appearance of a flawless complexion. In actual practice, starting out with the airbrush machine might seem difficult and complicated at first but with constant practice one would get used to it and find out that its very easy and fast to use.

image

The airbrush makeup is the safest method of applying makeup because its non contact thereby reducing the risk of infection and cross-contamination is much lower. You don’t have to disinfect your gun while using it to apply different makeup products as you do with pencils and brushes.
Due to its light weight, long lasting, flawlessness and easy to apply qualities, brides are advised to opt for the airbrush makeup on their big day. It also looks amazing on  professional photographs.

image

The head tie is a common women’s cloth in many parts of Africa. In Nigeria, the head tie is popularly called ‘Gele’. The Nigerian Gele is an ornamental head covering or fashion accessory used for different occasions and events.
The word ‘Gele’ is a Yoruba (a tribe in Nigeria) word for a female head tie. The Yoruba women are known for wearing Gele head dresses to parties and events. However, the Gele is not only peculiar to the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. Other tribes such as the Igbos who call it ‘Ichafu’ ;  the Urhobos call it ‘Urofo’ ; Bini call it ‘Ukiofon’ ; Akwa ibom call it ‘Afung Iwod’ ; Kwale call it ‘Okpu’ to mention but a few, also have their unique way of tying theirs.

The Nigerian Gele exhibits the rich culture of our African heritage. The history behind the head tie in Africa dates as far back as in the 1700s before slave trade began. For some culture, the head tie was a sign of affluence and wealth, while in some other cultures it was a sign of respect and spirituality. In our modern world today, Gele can be used to correct a woman’s face feature making her look younger and more beautiful. The Gele is like a crown of glory for the Nigerian women. The Gele can be tied in various styles they include:

Pillars of Adornment

image

Then our sons in their youth will be like well nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace”. (Psalm 144:12 NIV)

I was recently studying the scriptures when I found the latter part of the verse above and got really interested in it. I meditated and researched on the meaning and significance of the word Pillar. And I found out mind blowing things which will be discussed throughout this piece.

What exactly comes to a person’s mind when he/she hears the word ‘Pillar’? The first thing that came to mine was Support, Strength and Beauty. Pillar, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is a tall vertical structure of stone, wood or metal used as a support for a building, or as an ornament or monument. We can deduce from this definition that a pillar is strong, reliable, supportive, and beautiful. Going back to the scriptures that said, “…and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace”. I asked myself, why the women, why wasn’t it the men. Then I realised that no other gender can handle this position/responsibility better than the woman. Wow! This shows that every woman is strong, supportive, powerful, reliable and beautiful. If you as a woman haven’t started functioning in this capacity, it either means that you feel you can’t be it or you don’t know you can be.

God has called Women (Daughters, Sisters, Wives and Friends) to be pillars of support to whomever we come in contact with. Carving a pillar isn’t fun, the process of being strong, supportive and beautiful ain’t easy, but God has given us the ability to function in that capacity as A Pillar of Adornment. This starts with a close, deep relationship with God and completely aligning ourselves to His Will and He’ll work in us according to His pleasure. It entails dying to self to be able to function fully in the capacity of a pillar in our homes, offices, organisation, business place, church or wherever we find ourselves.

image

Having looked at the definition and significance of a pillar, lets also find out the meaning of Adornment. An adornment is something that adds attractiveness to a thing. In other words, a pillar adds attractiveness to a body, home, organisation, church etc.
These words, ‘pillar’ and ‘adornment’ have been used to define women. This should tell us that women are strong, powerful, reliable, supportive beings that enhances beauty! Wow! As a woman, if you have this knowledge of who you are, you can attract people to you. We need to understand that our strength makes us beautiful, without our support, the world can’t stand! Wow, that’s powerful!

A pillar is also visible. Women should be seen, we shouldn’t shy away and go into hiding. God has given us all we need to excel. Discover them and go do exploits! Women also have the ability to enhance the beauty of others but we can’t do this if we don’t have true beauty in us. You can’t give what you do not have, they say. We need to constantly focus on our inner selves, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is of great worth in God’s sight.(1Peter 3:3), not on the outward appearance only. Cos real beauty comes from the inside to the outside. Proverbs 11:22 MSG puts it this way, “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful face on an empty head”. Its as bad as that.
For wives, “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones”(Proverbs 12:4)
A kind hearted woman gains respect (Proverbs 11:16)
Stop waiting for people to affirm your beauty before you can ‘feel’ important and beautiful. Already know that you are the most beautiful woman on earth. A highly sought after woman, fearfully and wonderfully made by God.
Stop waiting for people to do your thinking for you. Discover you area of strengths, sharpen them by getting more knowledge. Be proactive! Be independent! You can do ALL things through Christ that gives you the strength.(Philippians 4:13).
You don’t need approval to do what you know is right. Once you are being led by the Spirit of God then you are at the centre of God’s Will. This gives you confidence in God and stops you from acting confused and unintelligent. Make yourself so reliable and supportive that without you, decisions can’t be taken in your sphere of influence. Above all, let your dependency come from God alone and not man. Let Him be your source cos He’ll always sustain you. Be willing to pay the price so that you can function in your place as A PILLAR OF ADORNMENT.

Is Your Name In The Book of Life?

image

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from His Presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the BOOK OF LIFE…” (Revelation 20:11-12 NIV).

Meditating on this scripture, I got to know that we all ( both great and small) will be judged according to our DEEDS. This got me thinking, and I asked myself, ‘So far, what have I done?’. Truthfully, I couldn’t answer this question. All I recall is that I’ve always wanted to have it all- Success, Fame, the best of everything. Forgetting the most important question of life, Is Your Name in the Book of Life?

Life is like a long journey filled with success, failures, triumphs, challenges, victories etc. The end (destination) thereof being your final place of abode. What you did with the experiences encountered on this long journey is recorded in the Books. Your Deeds are the prerequisites for having eternal life. (John 5:28-29 ; Romans 2:6-8). Do not be deceived by what you see in your environment at the moment, if you do not do good all the days of your life, the bible says you will be condemned. In other words, don’t get distracted by the cares of life. We all want to feel good by having the best of life. Some will do unimaginable things to get such comfort, while others will go about it the right way. One question we should ask ourselves in our quest for life is this, ‘Is this particular thing I did recorded in Heaven at the moment? If its being recorded, will it be termed GOOD or EVIL?’ I believe if these questions are genuinely answered it will keep us on track.
Yes, I understand that life can be harsh. Even the good we do on earth isn’t recognised. Rather its the bad and evil men that get to prosper. Even David felt bad when he wrote in Psalms that he almost slipped cos he envied the arrogant and the wicked who always had what they wanted, until the Lord opened his eyes and he understood their final destiny, DESTRUCTION!!! (Psalm73:1-20).

My friend, the most important thing in our pursuit of life is what we do with what life presents to us. Let your everyday goal be to have an excellent record of deeds in God’s book. How do I go about it? You may ask. Firstly, start a relationship with your Creator (If you haven’t already). Just like in every relationship, time is used to build and grow this relationship into a healthy and successful one. So spend time in getting to know Him by studying of the Word and Prayer. Ask Him to illuminate your eyes as you study, He’ll lead you from there. The more you study, the more your mind is renewed (Romans 12:2) , then it gradually affects your actions. Do not get engrossed by the material things in life, rather seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness every other thing will be added to you. (Matthew 6:25-33). Your heavenly Father knows you need such comfort and luxury, but if you get distracted by them then you’ll get off track.

The cares of life and worry distracts us from the goal but a life of discipline will always put our focus on Jesus, The Author and Finisher of our Faith. It doesn’t matter if your friends got there before you. What matters is how you got there. What did you do to get there? Is God proud of your deeds? Will He tell you, ‘Well done, Good and Faithful servant’ on that day? These are deep questions we all need to think about.

“Then the King will say to those on his right ‘ Come, you who are blessed by my Father, take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me’…” (Matthew 25 : 34-36 NIV)

These are the deeds God requires us to do. Remember we will be judged according to our deeds whether good or evil including every hidden thing. (Ecclesiastes 12:14).

“…the dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that where in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what He had DONE. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. IF ANYONE’S NAME WAS NOT FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE HE WAS THROWN INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE” (Revelation 20: 12-15 NIV).

Hmmm, IS YOUR NAME IN THE BOOK OF LIFE? Think about it…

The Product of Words

image

Exactly 51 years today, (28th August, 1963), a mountain moving speech was given by Martin Luther King Jnr. at the Lincoln Memorial Washington D.C. This speech, which inspired the whole world, is one of the things that made the United States of America what it is today including the declaration of Barack Obama (the first black american president) as the  44th President of the United States of America who is still in office till date. The Product of Words! Same thing happened in South Africa when a man named Nelson Mandela decided to stop the apartheid system in his country by words and action. Today South Africa is the most advanced African Country. The Product of Words!

I can go on and on with the examples of how great men used words to shape their lives and countries but let’s get to the nitty gritty.
From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.
The tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:20-21 NIV)
From the above passage we can see that our words are very powerful cos it shapes our lives and destinies. When we say harsh and negative words about ourselves we become the victims of our own words. In the same vein, when we say motivating and positive words to ourselves, we reap from them and are satisfied. In other words, we are the product of our words. We are the recipients of what we say about ourselves whether good or bad.

Words are so powerful that it was used to create the world we live in. The clouds, the stars, the seas, the trees, animals, the sun, moon, you and me were created with words. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God”. (John 1:1NIV)
What does this tell us? Whatever you want to see, Say it!  Allowing others opinion of you drown the opinion you have of yourself is a very dangerous thing. It reduces your self esteem as a person. If Martin Luther King Jnr and other world heroes allowed other people’s opinion of them to rule, there wouldn’t be the results of what we see in their respective countries today. These men gave their lives speaking and acting on what they believed so much in. I was talking to a lady recently, I noticed she never said a word without using the phrase of , “So and so said something about me” . I realised that she didn’t have a good opinion of herself cos she has allowed these negative words into her life. Making her gradually believing such words which now reflects in her life. She is now a product of those words. When people tell you things you are not comfortable with about yourself, resist such words cos you are in charge of your life!

This also applies to parents. We should be very careful with the words we use on our kids. We cannot curse and praise our kids with the same mouth and expect them to become great people. Kids can be naughty a times, it behooves on us to always ask God for Wisdom to handle every issue concerning our kids the right way. You speak what you wanna see in your kids. The way you speak to your kids determines how others will speak to them too. Please let’s be very careful cos our kids are products of our words too. (James 3:10-11).
Now to my beloved country, Nigeria. We all in one way or another have said negative words about this nation. Yes a lot still needs to be done, the first world nations we hear of was ,at a time, like us. They chose to say what they wanted to see in their country and worked hard for it, some giving their lives as a price to be paid. Today, their children are full recipients of the words they spoke years ago.

“…I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character…” (Excerpts from Martin Luther King Jnr’s Speech).
This is so today.

The end of the matter is this , what is your dream? What do you want to see in your life, family, business, career, ministry, country etc? Speak it cos YOU ARE A PRODUCT OF YOUR WORDS!

Is The Fear of Ebola Virus Disease The Beginning of Wisdom?

image

Hmmmm, a lot have been said of this deadly virus that is ravaging West Africa and posing as a major threat to the world. This said disease is highly infectious and deadly, affecting humans and animals such as bats, monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees. Ebola occurs in sporadic outbreak.

Ok, enough of the introduction to Ebola disease let’s get down to the main issue at hand. Having gotten so much information on this Ebola virus, it has increased fear among individuals in Africa and the rest of the World. This fear has made lots of people to do unimaginable things in order to shield themselves from this deadly disease. Some have shut themselves out from the rest of the world, some have taken tons and tons of salt into their system (forgetting that this could lead to death too, as too much salt isn’t good for the body), some have bathed with salt water, eaten lots of bitter kola and the list goes on. All these are manifestations of the word called FEAR.

Fear blinds and puts one in bondage, it shuts out all sense of reasoning making one to loose his peace which paralyzes. That was exactly the case on the 8th of August 2014 when the people of Nigeria woke up to calls, sms, bbm, facebook and whatsapp messages that drinking and bathing with salt water cures Ebola. There was neither a biblical base nor a scientific base for such postulations but so many were led astray, some even lost their lives. The consequences of Fear.

image

So I ask this question, Is the fear of Ebola disease the beginning of Wisdom? Of course NOT! Not in anyway can the fear of a disease be the beginning of wisdom. Rather it makes one foolish and blinded to Spiritual and Logical reasoning. From the scriptures, God warned us (God’s Children) not to fear and dread what others fear and dread. Rather we should fear and reverence HIM. Cos THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM. The fear of the Lord keeps us focused on Him. When we fear the Lord, we have wisdom to fight all forms of physical/spiritual battles that is presented to us. Rather than running helter skelter looking for information that produces fear which makes one act foolishly, why don’t you sit down and spend time reading and getting to know God in His Word which will produce faith in you.  In the book of Proverbs, the ninth chapter verse ten said “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the KNOWLEDGE of the Holy One is UNDERSTANDING” (Emphasis mine). Spend more time with your Creator who is your Source and He’ll always illuminate your eyes, heart and mind as to what steps to take pertaining any issue you have.

Never allow your environment, friends, family put fear in you. Let your focus be on Jesus the Author and the Perfecter of your Faith. If you do not stand firm in your FAITH, you will not stand AT ALL. (Isaiah7:9b NIV). So make up your mind to stand firm in Faith by filling your heart with God’s Word, let it get down to your spirit. Remember Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God(Romans 10:17).

Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33) . Halleluyah! Isn’t that comforting? You get to have Peace in Christ not in this world. Cos in this world, it will keep getting worse.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  Jesus said. (John 14:27)
